I just feel like shouting at the top of my voice "I have installed and configured Fedora 5 on my laptop". Yes. This is the end of the beginning of me migrating from Windows into Linux.
Alrite, herez the story..
2000 - Me and my friend Ram Prasad installed RH 6 on my PC at home (oops. we wiped out the entire Windows parition unknowingly). We spent lots of time configuring sound and other HW. It really took something to configure dial up network in RH 6. (I never really worked much on Linux and mainly used it for listening to music :))
2005 - Installed RH 9 on my laptop. Sound and NW didnt configure. After some struggle configuring them, I gave up.
2006 May 30 - Downloaded and installed Fedora 5. Sound card was detected and Ethernet card was detected as well :). The challenge was to configure the Wireless card.
2006 June 3 - Configured the wireless card. There is a project in sourceforge called Ndiswrapper which implements Windows Kernel API and NDIS (NW Driver Interface Specification) within Linux kernel. They have an excellent wiki with the install instrns and FAQ. It was a great learning for me, a linux newbie throughout the course of configuring my wireless connectivity. Thank God. I was finally able to configure wireless and that hopefully marks the end of the beginning...
Some of the cool features I noted are
1. Fedora 5 has built-in Eclipse 3.1
2. Open Office comes built-in
3. An utility for Adding and Removing SW, which has the list of all SW which could be installed on Fedora 5. So we dont have to worry hunting for rpm and executing them. It is click based
4. An utility for Online updates which updates the SW's available on your system.
I will post as and when I hit something exciting during my exploration of Fedora.
I am really excited about this post as this is the first post I am making from Fedora 5.
And BTW, if anyone is planning to install Fedora 5 and needs any help, I'll be glad to help you out with the little knowledge I have on it.
