Protocol for Authenticating friends ??

I was wondering about the process humans follow to authenticate fellow beings. We recognize and thereby authenticate a friend by just looking at him and we authorize access to people depending on how much we know them. For eg, we would allow a close friend to our bed room while we restrict a postman to the gate. How do we make authentication / authorization decisions. Can we implement this concept of human based authentication / authotization into computer systems ? Will that be effective ? It might not because how sure can you authenticate / authorize twins. But then you might after observing their characteristics. May be more research needs to go into this. Does someone know of any such research happening anywhere ?
I googled out to see some DNA based Authentication paper. Sounds interesting...
